About SMA

The South Main Alliance (SMA) is a 501(c)(3) corporation formed in 1976 based on recommendations in a National Endowment for the Arts funded study conducted by Rice University titled Options for a Unique Texas Place, that urged the creating of a framework for collaboration to protect and enhance a special area with great diversity and quality of life. The South Main area is unique in Houston for its concentration of educational, cultural, health care, innovation and entertainment parks, campuses and institutions. Supported by memberships, SMA's Board of Directors holds joint meetings with the Main Street Coalition.

SMA Mission:
To provide a forum through which the South Main area's powerful interests identify common concerns and goals and take concerted action, especially in the realm of public policy. SMA works to improve the South Main experience, engage and support organizations and businesses within the area, and elevate the quality of life for those who live, work and visit.
