The mission of the South Main Alliance is to protect and enhance the quality of life in the South Main area where the Museum District, Hermann Park, Reliant Park, the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, the University of St. Thomas and the Houston Community College System are located and to support physical and intellectual connectivity among these organizations and the neighborhoods surrounding them. The South Main Alliance achieves its mission through collaboration, planning, communication and advocacy.
The South Main Alliance is a 501( c ) (3) corporation founded in 1976 as the South Main Center Association based on recommendations in the National Endowment for the Arts funded study “Options for a Unique Texas Place” that urged the creating a framework for collaboration to protect and enhance a special area with great diversity and quality of life. The South Main area is 12 square miles -- which compares to one square mile for the Downtown.
